Addressing Societal Issues through Filmmaking

Film is a vehicle to bring stories to life. To bring different cultures together through a common medium. As a filmmaker, I am a storyteller. As a storyteller you cannot be afraid to share both the bad and the good that every story holds. You can never account for exactly what an audience is going to take away from your film but you can have a goal for every story you tell. A goal that can transcend the screen.

In making Far From Home, our goal was simple. We wanted this film to be a vehicle to help Brolin (the subject of the film) make his Olympic dreams a reality. We knew his story was powerful and touched upon issues of race and abuse but is an overall positive story. As a filmmaker, you always have a bias, no matter how objective you want to be. We knew we could never satisfy everyone and we had to make creative sacrifices. We told the story in what we thought to be the most genuine and authentic way possible. Then we left it up to the audience to decide what they wanted to take away. By doing this, we are able to initiate discussions that hit on a wide range of subject matter. The film becomes a starting point to address bigger issues that we as a community must solve. Topics that are controversial and quietly swept under the rug in many cultures suddenly become main points of discussions through films. Problems are addressed and solutions are proposed. All in all, film brings us together. It goes without saying!

We are all different. We come from varying economic backgrounds, races, countries, and circumstances. Yet we all have the ability to relate to each other. When we find the courage to be vulnerable and tell our stories in pure and genuine forms, we are able to see part of ourselves in others no matter how different we are.

ማህበራዊ ጉዳዮችን በፊልም ጥበብ መዳሰስ

በፊል ሔስለር፤ አሜሪካዊ የፊልም ባለሙያ

ፊልም ለተረኮች የህይወት እስትንፋስ ይሰጣቸዋል፡፡ የጋራ በሆነ አውታር የተለያዩ ባህሎች ወደ አንድ የሚመጡበት መድረክም ነው፡፡ እንደ አንድ የፊልም ባለሙያ ተራኪም ነኝ ማለት እችላለሁ፡፡ ስለዚህም እንደ አንድ ተራኪ የአንድን ትርክት ጥሩውንም ሆነ መጥፎውን አቀርባለሁ፡፡ አንድ የፊልም ታዳሚ አንድን ፊልም ከተመለከተ በኋላ፤ በምን መልኩ እንደሚረዳው ማወቅ ባይቻልም፣ ለእያንዳንዱ ፊልም ግብ መያዝ ይቻላል፡፡ በእስክሪን ላይ ከሚታየው ምስል የሚልቅ ግብ፡፡

Far From Home የተሰኘውን ፊልም ስንሠራ ግባችን ቀለል ያለ ነበር፡፡ የባለታሪኩን የብሮሊንን የኦሎምፒክ ህልም እውን በማድረግ ላይ ያጠነጠነ እንዲሆን ነበር የታሰበው፡፡ ታሪኩ ትልቅ ኃይል ያለውና የተለያዩ በዘረኝነትና በመገፋት ላይ ያተኮሩ ጉዳዮችን የያዘ መሆኑ ቢታወቅም፤ በአጠቃላይ የታሪኩ መንፈስ አዎንታዊ ገጽታ ያለው ነው፡፡ አንድ የፊልም ባለሙያ ምንጊዜም ገለልተኛ ለመሆን ቢሞክርም፤ ከወገንተኝነት ነፃ ሊሆን አይችልም፡፡ ሁሉንም ሰው ማስደሰት እንደማንችል ስለተረዳን፤ ለኪናዊ ፋይዳ ስንል የከፈልነው መስዋዕትነት አለ፡፡ ታሪኩን ፍጹም ሐቅና ትክክለኛ ባልነው መንገድ አቀረብን፡፡ ከዛም የፊልሙ ታዳሚ በገባው መንገድ ታሪኩን ይረዳው አልን፡፡ እንደዚህ በማድረጋችንም በበርካታ ጉዳዮች ዙሪያ የተለያዩ ውይይቶች እንዲጀመሩ መነሻ ሆንን፡፡ ፊልሙ እንደማህበረሰብ ልንፈታቸው ስለሚገቡን ጉዳዮች እንድንወያይ መነሻ ሆነ፡፡ በአብዛኛው በየማህበረሰቡ ድብቅ የሆኑ ጉዳዮች በፊልም ጥበብ ገሀድ ከወጡ በኋላ የመወያያ ርዕሶች ይሆናሉ፡፡ በችግሮች ዙሪያ ውይይቶች ተደርገው የመፍትሔ ሐሳቦች ይቀርባሉ፡፡ በጥቅሉ ፊልም ወደ አንድ እንደሚያመጣን ጥርጥር የለውም፡፡

ሁላችንም የተለያየን ነን፡፡ ከተለያዩ የኢኮኖሚ፣ የዘር፣ የሀገር እና የእውነታዎች ዳራ የመጣን ቢሆንም፤ አንዳችን ከሌላችን ጋር በቀላሉ መቀራረብ የምንችል ፍጡራን ነን፡፡ የቱንም ያህል ብንለያይ ግን፤ ታሪኮቻችንን በሐቅና በገለልተኝነት የማቅረብ ድፍረቱ ሲኖረን፤ ራሳችንን በርግጠኝነት በሌሎች ውስጥ ማየት እንችላለን፡፡
