Empowering Youth through Sport

Recently held in Dire Dawa was the Community Outreach Youth Soccer (COYS) Program which brings together regional soccer player youth’s for community building workshops and a three-day tournament.  Selected participants from the Somali, Harari, and Dire Dawa regions were invited, with support provided in part through the U.S. Embassy along with partnerships with local and regional leaders.  The fifth year of this particular youth program, it espouses the virtues of empowerment through sports while also incorporating community involvement as an integral part of its underlying mission.

The Soccer (Football) tournament was hosted at Dire Dawa Stadium with community networking hosted by the local police commission.  The notion of community involvement with safety speaks to the integrated approach to sustainable development in the region, where neighbors support each other rather than a reliance on others.  The students were involved with on-the-ground observations of community policing, learning the social and cultural skills associated with trust acting as a gateway to relationship building.

The Football tournament itself featured both men’s as well as women’s teams, with two each from Somali, Harari, and Dire Dawa.  Competitive yet friendly, the games highlighted the athletic skills of a number of individual players and collective teams, providing exciting games with contested results.  The opening rounds were played on Friday with the respective Championship Games held on Sunday.  Yet more important than the score was the regional cooperation and sportsmanship displayed by all, with a mutual respect for the game and for each other.

In attendance over the course of the programming were U.S. Embassy representatives, regional community elders, and local government officials, all cognizant of the importance of this semiannual event. Empowerment through sports shows the understanding these combined entities have for sustainable and powerful lessons both on and off the field.  Donated Football equipment from the Embassy coupled with lessons told by community elders went to underscore the importance of such collaboration; a shared vision where students gain knowledge and power through a variety of resources.

ስፖርትን በመጠቀም ወጣቶችን ማብቃት

በቅርቡ ወጣቶችን የሚያስተሳስረው የድሬዳዋው የእግር ኳስ ጨዋታ ፕሮግራም፤ በአካባቢው የሚገኙ ወጣት ስፖርተኞች የተሳተፉበት፣ የሦስት ቀናት የማኅበረሰብ ግንባታ ላይ ያተኮረ ዐውደ ምክክርና የእግር ኳስ ውድድር የተካሄደበት ነበር፡፡ የአሜሪካ ኤምባሲ በከፊል ባደረገው ድጋፍ፤ ከአካባቢው ከሚገኙ አመራር አካላትና አጋሮች ጋር በመተባበር ከሶማሌና ከሐረሪ ክልሎች፤እንዲሁም ከድሬዳዋ ከተማ አስተዳደር የተመረጡ ተሳታፊዎች በፕሮግራሙ ላይ ተገኝተዋል፡፡ ይህ አምስተኛ ዓመቱን የያዘው ፕሮግራም፤ በስፖርት የማብቃት ዓላማን ያነገበ ከመሆኑም በላይ፤የማኅበረሰብ ተሳትፎን የማሳደግ ተልዕኮ  አለው፡፡

የእግር ኳስ ጨዋታው በድሬዳዋ እስታዲዬም የተካሄደ ሲሆን፤ የማኅበረሰብ ትስስር ፕሮግራሙ ደግሞ  ድሬዳዋ ፖሊስ ኮሚሽን አስተናግዶታል፡፡ ከደህንነት ጋር የተቆራኘ የማኅረሰብ መረዳዳትና መደጋገፍ ከአካባቢው የተቀናጀ የጋራ ልማት አስተሳሰብ ጋር የሚተሳሰር ነው፡፡ በአካባቢው ጎረቤታሞች እርስ በርስ በመደጋገፍ እንጂ፤ከሌላ አካል ድጋፍ በመጠበቅ አይታወቁም፡፡ ተማሪዎቹ የማኅበረሰብ የወንጀል መከላከል እንቅስቃሴዎችንና ከዚህ ጋር ተያያዥ የሆኑ ማኅበራዊና ባህላዊ ክህሎቶችን እንዲሁም እርስ በርስ መተማመን የሚዳብሩባቸው መንገዶች ጤናማ ግንኙነት ከመፍጠር አኳያ እንዴት እንደሚታይ መማር ችለዋል፡፡

የእግር ኳስ ውድድሩ ከሶማሌና ከሐረሪ ክልሎች እንዲሁም ከድሬዳዋ ከተማ  የተመረጡ ሁለቱም ጾታዎች የተሳተፉበት ነበር፡፡ በነዚህ ውድድሮች ተጫዋቾች የግልም ሆነ የቡድን ብቃት አሳይተዋል፣በወዳጅነት ላይ የተመሠረተ ፉክክር ተንፀባርቆባቸዋል፤ ደስ በሚል ጨዋታ ጠንካራ ውጤቶችም ተመዝግቦባቸዋል፡፡ ዓርብ ዕለት የመክፈቻ ወድድሮቹ ከተካሄዱ በኋላ፤እሁድ የሻምፒዮና ጨዋታዎች ተስተናግደዋል፡፡ ከተቆጠሩት ግቦች በላይ ሊታይ የሚገባው ዋናው ቁም ነገር፣ ክልሎቹ ስፖርታዊ ወዳጅነትን ለማጠናከር የፈጠሩት ትብብርና ተሳታፊዎቹ ለጨዋታውና አንዳቸው ለሌላቸው ያላቸው ክብር ነው፡፡

ዝግጅቱ ተጀምሮ እስኪጠናቀቅ የአሜሪካ ኤምባሲ ተወካዮች፣የክልሉ ሀገር ሽማግሌዎችና የየአካባቢዎቹ የመንግሥት ባለሥልጣናት የተገኙ ሲሆን፤እነዚህ ሁሉ አካላት የዚህን በዓመት ሁለቴ የሚካሄደውን ዝግጅት አስፈላጊነት በሚገባ የተገነዘቡ ናቸው፡፡ ስፖርቱን በመጠቀም የሚሠራው የማብቃት ሥራም በሁለቱ  መካከል ያለውን ትስስር በሚገባ የሚያመለክት ነው፡፡ ሜዳው ላይም ሆነ ከሜዳው ውጭ ዘላቂና ጠንከር ያለ ትምህርት የሚቀሰምበትም ነው፡፡ ከኤምባሲው የተበረከቱ የስፖርት ቁሳቁሶችና በሀገር ሽማግሌዎች የተለገሱ ምክሮች፤የዚህ ዓይነቱን ትብብር አስፈላጊነት ከማጉላታቸውም በላይ፤ ተማሪዎቹ ለጋራ ራዕይ ዕውቀትና ብቃት የሚያገኙባቸውን የተለያዩ መንገዶች የሚጠቁምም ጭምር ነው፡፡
